Cutting through political noise

Lets keep something in mind when we wake up on November 5th and congratulate Barack Obama for building a landslide mandate for democrats and the liberal agenda across America.

There are 300 million people in this country - something in the neighborhood of 228 million who are eligible to vote.

In 2004, out of that large number of people, 121 million people voted in the presidential election for Bush or Kerry. George W. Bush won with around 62 million votes cast for him.

That means that roughly 27% of the people in the United States who were eligible to vote ended up walking into a voting booth and pulling the lever for the man who became president. If you expand that to all people in the country itself, its less than 20% of the total number of people living in the United States.

So, lets be generous and say that in 2008, turnout will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 million people, and that Obama will win say 52%. That would give him 78 million votes. Lets say that registrations spiked and there are now 235 million registered voters. His votes would account for 33% of registered voters and around 24% of total Americans in the United States.

Impressive, certainly - but when we use words like “mandate” and “overwhelming victory” and such - keep in mind that 67% of the country (my my rough guess) will either be opposed to him, or so indifferent to him so much that they didn’t vote.

So, when I advised the democrats not to over-reach if they want to keep their majorities in government - this is why. Always remember, no matter how excited you get about an election in the United States, even the most resounding victories leave you in a minority.
